Your electrical panel is the one part of your house you probably never think about — right up until the moment it makes you. In Las Cruces and El Paso, where a lot of the housing stock dates back fifty, sixty, even eighty years, plenty of homes are still running on panels that were sized for a very different era: no refrigerated air, no EV in the driveway, no kitchen full of appliances, maybe a swamp cooler and a window unit if you were lucky.
A panel that’s out of capacity — or out of its depth — doesn’t always announce itself dramatically. Here are the seven signs worth taking seriously, roughly in the order homeowners tend to notice them, plus what an upgrade actually involves and why this is one job you don’t touch yourself.
1. Breakers That Trip Constantly
A breaker tripping once in a while is a breaker doing its job. A breaker tripping every time you run the microwave and the toaster together, or every summer evening when the AC kicks on, is a circuit — and often a whole panel — telling you it’s overloaded. Resetting it over and over isn’t a fix; it’s a habit that masks the underlying problem. If you’ve memorized which two appliances can’t run at the same time, your house has already failed the capacity test.
2. Service Under 100 Amps
Many older Borderland homes were built with 60-amp service, and some still have it. Modern households — with refrigerated air, electric water heating, a shop, or a car charger — are generally designed around 100-amp service at minimum, and 200 amps is the common standard for new construction and major remodels. If your main breaker or your service equipment says anything under 100 amps, you’re living at the ceiling of what the panel can deliver, and any new load of consequence will push you past it.
3. A Fuse Box Instead of Breakers
If your panel has screw-in fuses rather than switches, it isn’t automatically unsafe — fuses interrupt faults just fine — but it is a clear marker of an electrical system from another generation, usually with the undersized service and aging wiring to match. Fuse boxes also invite a dangerous workaround: replacing a blown fuse with a bigger one so it stops blowing, which quietly removes the protection the fuse existed to provide. Insurers increasingly frown on fuse boxes too, and some will surcharge or decline homes that still have them. If you’re on fuses, an upgrade conversation is overdue.
4. You’re Planning an EV, a Hot Tub, or a Refrigerated Air Conversion
This is the forward-looking sign, and around here it’s the most common trigger. The big three upgrades Borderland homeowners make — an EV charger, a hot tub, and a swamp-cooler-to-refrigerated-air conversion — are all large 240-volt loads, and an older panel frequently can’t absorb any one of them, let alone two. The right order of operations is to have an electrician run a load calculation before you sign the contract for the shiny new thing, so the panel work is planned and priced up front instead of discovered mid-project when the AC crew opens the panel and stops working.
5. A Warm Panel, Burning Smell, or Buzzing — Call Now
Everything else on this list is a schedule-an-appointment sign. This one is different. A panel door that’s warm to the touch, a fishy or burning-plastic smell near the panel, scorch marks, or a persistent buzzing or crackling sound means heat is being generated where it shouldn’t be — loose connections, failing breakers, or damaged conductors. That’s an active fire risk, not a someday project. Stop adding load, and call a licensed electrician the same day. If the smell is strong or anything is visibly smoking, that’s a fire department call first.
6. Lights That Flicker or Dim When Appliances Start
A brief dim when the AC compressor kicks on can be normal, especially in summer. But lights that noticeably flicker or sag every time the well pump, dryer, or air conditioner starts — or that dim in one part of the house when you use another — suggest the service or the panel connections are struggling to deliver current on demand. Sometimes the culprit is a utility-side issue, sometimes it’s the panel; an electrician can tell you which, and it’s worth finding out, because the same weak link that dims your lights is also stressing your appliances and electronics.
7. No Room for New Circuits
Open your panel door and look: if every slot is filled — or worse, if previous owners “solved” that with tandem breakers doubled into single slots or a tangle of add-on subpanels — the panel is physically out of runway. A full panel doesn’t just block new projects; it’s often the visible symptom of decades of piecemeal additions that nobody ever stepped back and load-calculated as a whole. A modern panel with honest spare capacity resets that clock.
What a Panel Upgrade Actually Involves
“Panel upgrade” covers a range of work, and a good electrician will tell you which version your house needs:
- Panel replacement — swapping an old, full, or obsolete panel for a modern breaker panel with more spaces, at the same service size.
- Service upgrade — increasing the amperage coming into the house (say, 60 or 100 amps up to 200), which typically means new service-entrance conductors, a new meter base, and coordination with El Paso Electric or your local utility to disconnect and reconnect power.
- Both at once — the most common scenario in older homes, since if you’re doing one it rarely makes sense to skip the other.
Expect a permit, a utility coordination step, most of a day (sometimes more) without power, and a formal inspection before the utility re-energizes the service. Grounding and bonding usually get brought up to current code as part of the job, and newer code requirements — like arc-fault and surge protection — may apply as well. It’s disruptive for a day and then invisible for decades, which is exactly what you want from electrical infrastructure.
Why DIY Is Off the Table
Plenty of home projects reward a confident amateur. This is not one of them. The service side of your panel can remain energized even with the main breaker off — the incoming lugs are live unless the utility pulls the meter — and mistakes at the panel don’t produce a tingle, they produce arc flash. Beyond the physical danger, panel and service work requires permits and licensed professionals: in New Mexico, electricians are licensed through the state’s Construction Industries Division, and in Texas through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). Unpermitted panel work can void insurance coverage, complicate a future home sale, and fail the exact inspection you’ll eventually need for that EV charger or AC conversion.
